On the Red Carpet... Modern Love is Automatic

During the CineKink NYC/2010 festivities, Ivy Liegh chats with cast and crew of Modern Love is Automatic, including director Zach Clark, actresses Maggie Ross and Melodie Sisk, and cinematographer Daryl Pittman.

The stylized film, which won a CineKink Select Award for Creative Vision, asks some burning questions: Will Lorraine’s secret life as a dominatrix be revealed? And will Adrian sell enough mattresses to be featured in the big coupon spread? In pursuing their hidden desires and misguided dreams, both girls find their paths crossing in ways they never expected.

On the Red Carpet... Anti-Samaritan Hotline

During the CineKink NYC/2010 festivities, Ivy Liegh chats with director A. Tad Chamberlain about his film, Anti-Samaritan Hotline.

The film, which won a CineKink Select Award for Creative Vision, is a "comedy about death, despair, suicide and sado-masochism."

'S&M Judge' to open CineKink NYC

The CineKink “Season Opener” selection for our seventh annual film festival, CineKink NYC, running February 16-21, 2010, will be the US premiere of the award-winning drama, S&M Judge.

Directed by Flemish filmmaker Erik Lamens and based on a celebrated Belgian incident, the film tells of a respected judge who, desperate to save his marriage, reluctantly gives in to fulfilling the masochistic desires his wife has been hiding from him for decades. Initially shocked at her revelation, his love helps him overcome his inhibitions, and they begin to enjoy a secret life in the city's underground S/M scene.

But when the two are caught up in a police sting, his arrest and trial cause a national scandal. While their activities have been purely consensual, the court views his participation as criminal, putting his job, reputation and family life in jeopardy.

S&M Judge is a beautiful and moving account of the conflict many face in balancing their sexual desires with societal views of what is ‘normal’—and with outmoded legal restrictions that are still on the books in many communities,” said Lisa Vandever, co-founder and director of CineKink. “We’re very proud to give the film its US premiere and present it to our audiences.”

S&M Judge will screen on Wednesday, February 17, 6:45 pm at Anthology Film Archives, where the majority of the festival screenings are also unfolding.

CineKink NYC kicks off the previous evening, Tuesday, February 16, with a gala fundraising party, and runs through Sunday, February 21, concluding with an awards ceremony and an AfterGlow closing party.

More info on all that--and advance tickets--coming soon!
Update: Tickets are available here! A donation of 25% from all advance ticket sales will go to support NCSF.

Sissies Gone Wilder!!

We could try to pass it off as brilliant planning, but it was actually fortuitous happenstance that Sissy Stephanie and Sissy Carol, co-stars of the wildly popular CineKink trailer, Sissies Gone Wild!, scheduled an excursion to coincide with CineKink: San Francisco.

Naturally, it's a happenstance we'll happily exploit and we've invited both of the lovelies to join us for an encore presentation of Sissies Gone Wild! and a personal appearance at tonight's screening of Lipsticks & Crinoline, our pan-sexy program of colorful gender frolics. (Come for the gender frolics at 7pm, then stay for a cinematic celebration of female pleasure, Wanton Female Desire, at 9 pm.)

Are you ready to get wild?!

Where in the world...

...have we been hiding? For the past week, at least, it's been off to Germany, where we had the pleasure of attending the Pornfilmfestival Berlin!

Photobucket

A wonderful event with a familiar merging of independent cinema and sex-positivity, it felt quite a bit like old-home week, even if we were on unfamiliar terrain. We came across many new films and directors we'll hope to feature at the next edition of CineKink NYC. And, in a historic gathering--we finally have enough erotic/sex/porn film festivals to call a meeting!--chatted with other curators and presenters whom we'll look forward to collaborating with in the future.

In addition to presenting a program we'd specially curated for the festivities, CineKink's Kinky Bits, it was also a delight to catch up with CineKink alumni filmmakers Charles Lum, Jennifer Lyon Bell, Candida Royalle, Julie Simone and Sofia Varino, while finally getting to meet directors whose works we've featured, including Anna Span and Shine Louise Houston.

Alas, after their brilliant performance at the Pornfilmfestival Berlin party, we found ourselves too star-struck to finally say hello to the rest of the notorious Norwegian singing sensation, The Hungry Hearts, even though their piece In the Closet screened at CineKink NYC 2009.

We'll hope to resolve our shyness someday. Meanwhile, we'll continue to admire from afar. And play In Your Face (The International Lesbian Anthem), over and over and over again. (It's stuck in my head... might as well be in yours, too!)

Mumbleporn? Swanberg revolutionizes full frontal!

Recalling his shocked dismay upon learning of all the governmental regulations around filmic depictions of sex, we'd like to think that director Joe Swanberg's participation in our SXSW panel, The Porn Police: Know The Rules, may have finally inspired him to cover his, um, ass.

In any case, we're very intrigued by the revolutionary technology he's utilizing on his new movie, Birthday Suit, an amazing advance that allows him to create the illusion of graphic sexual content. "If anybody, for even a split second, realizes that it's a digital erection, then we have failed," says Joe.

Here's a behind-the-scenes report from the set:

It's not that complicated. Well, maybe kinda... but still.

More polyamory in the mainstream of late. First up, on Parks and Recreation, Leslie meets April's boyfriend... and April's boyfriend's boyfriend. He's gay for him, but straight for her and well, you know.

(Hat-tip Practical Polyamory)

And next, writer Jenny Block, author of Open: Love, Sex and Life, introduces the concept of polyamory to a less accepting (and real-life) audience. Wearing a brazen red dress, she appears at a Texas church--and holds her own--discussing the relationship she has with her husband and girlfriend on "Nightline Face-Off: Born to Cheat?"

Forget Kanye...'I'm Polyamorous' on MTV!

Slightly lost in the ongoing hub-bub over Kayne West's outburst on the Music Video Awards, this week MTV True Life premiered an episode, "I'm Polyamorous," that follows young polyamorous sorts in both NYC and the Carolinas.

Diana Adams, one of these sorts, writes of the experience:

The decision to share my polyamorous life with millions of people on MTV is scary because being non-monogamous is taboo. I don’t think polyamory is right for everyone, and I respect monogamous relationships, but I’ve found that having more than one partner is really right for me. I am telling my story so that young people will realize that there are many choices in relationships, love, and family style. Breaking the rules about what love should look like and sharing that with the world is risky, but being fearlessly open to the world also feels incredibly freeing!

Photobucket

Shortly available online, the episode will be airing on MTV throughout the month and posts from those featured in the show will appear on the blog for the series. Take a look, leave your comments, share with the world what's worked for you--or not--in polyamory!

How about a thumbs up?!

Vote for my PanelPicker Idea!

We recently submitted a couple of proposals on topics we'd like to present at the next SXSW festival--and we'd love your thumbs-up support on either or both if you're so inclined.

Both proposals have been included in the SXSW 2010 PanelPicker, the rather sadomasochistic tool that the event uses to help determine which topics will ultimately be included... your "yes" votes and comments can definitely make a difference!

#1 - The Porn Police Are STILL at the Door
Not just for pornographers, the notion for this panel grew out of our work curating CineKink, as we noticed that entries submitted by filmmakers from the adult sphere typically included notice that federal record-keeping requirements for sexually explicit material had been properly met, while those coming from the independent film world did not. (If you’re thinking “2257, huh?” that could probably be you!) Making matters worse, the regulations have recently been expanded to cover not just actual or documentary depictions of sex, but simulated situations—ie fiction—as well.

Yikes, you say? Pick this panel!

#2 - Was It Something I Said? TOS And Content
Meanwhile, this panel was inspired by the frustrations we've experienced over the years trying to position and promote a sex-related endeavor on the internet--from finding a web host and sending email blasts, to processing ticket sales and donations, to creating an identity in social marketing and getting our videos placed on popular sites. Seemingly the old adage--“I’ll know it when I see it”--flourishes online, where murky definitions of what content is and is not allowed abound. One gatekeeper’s “inappropriate” is another’s “adult” is another’s “offensive, obscene and/or pornographic.” How are we affected as users and creators--and is there any recourse?

Wanna find out? Pick this panel!

Action Alert: Vote for the Yodeling Dominatrix!

Don't ever say we're not timely! Well, okay, lots of times we're not, but tonight we're responding to an urgent plea from CineKink alum Tonya Bezra, who writes:

There was just an amazing act on America's Got Talent where a woman did a really cute 50's domination scene... but the judges "gong showed" her off so she couldn't even finish.  The judges all expressed disappointment at her not staying with what she had done in the qualifying rounds which was "yodeling dominatrix" like in a more pvc cat woman look.  My heart just went out to her.  Because it was clear that she didn't want to be a one-gimmick pony and the 50's housewife dominatrix thing was so cute.  Anyway, so my fantasy of fantasies is that people will call in and vote for this woman.  Her name is Manuella Horn.  To vote for her you dial 1-866-602-4505.

Here she is, above, doing a retro-themed roleplay performance on tonight's episode.

And here is Manuela's infamous appearance as the "Yodeling Dominatrix", when she made the first qualifying round back in June.

You have until 6 am ET/3 am PT to cast your vote and fulfill Tonya's fantasy!

We originally noticed the art form in conjunction with the first annual Air Sex World Championship, held last fall in Austin, but haven't yet witnessed the act first-hand.

That will change this week--for much of America--as the competition takes to the road in search of this year's champion Air Sex performer. Kicking off tonight in Atlanta, the tour takes place over the next three weeks in cities across the nation.

Think you've got what it takes? Take a peek at last year's action for some guidelines and be prepared to serve it up!

What to do, what to do?

Holy dueling CineKink alumni! Tonight's entertainment options might leave us with something of a dilemma, as disparate performers from CineKink kick-offs past take the stage in different parts of the city. (NYC that is, apologies to be so centric.)

But if you move fast you may be able to catch them both, proving that you really can enjoy everything you desire. Performing at 8 PM, that fabulous cabaret duo, The Wet Spots will bring their sophisticated sex comedy to the Zipper Factory. Then at 10 PM, zoom on down to the Slipper Room for the Jessica Delfino Dirty Folk Rock Show.

Below, a few tantalizing dollops of what treats lie in store, as our performers offer up their musical talents in praise of favorite orifi:

The procrastinator's almost-too-late gift-giving guide to kinky cinema

Maybe it's our masochistic streak, but we always find ourselves waiting until it's really almost too late before we kick into gift-giving mode during the holiday season. Ahhhh the sweet torture...the rush of adrenalin, the sense of impending danger as we fear we've really done it this time...followed by the relief of just barely squeaking it out in time!

For those of you who also indulge in this ritualistic practice of self-abuse, a few choice tidbits of cinematic kink for your giving pleasure, all available with a little extra penance paid in the form of two-day (next-day?!) shipping via Amazon.

But hurry! Or not, if you really enjoy your punishments:

Preaching to the Perverted
As we mentioned earlier, there's a new Guinevere Turner-hosted edition of this sexy saga, the tale of a fresh-faced (and suit-wearing!) moral crusader who attempts to infiltrate the lair of fetish goddess Tanya Cheex (aka Guinevere Turner!). (Winner, Audience Choice Award for Best Narrative Feature, CineKink '03)

Silken Sleeves
Just in time for the new year, director Maria Beatty celebrates the four seasons of kink in the form of bondage diva Midori lavishing all kinds of attention on the helpless and beautiful Maya. Fall, winter, spring...mmm, summer! (Winner, Audience Choice Award for Best Experimental Feature, CineKink '08)

Swingtown: The First Season
Oh, the swinging seventies! We're still waiting for news that this engagingly sex-positive ABC(!) series will be back for another round--yep, we're masochists--but in the meantime, here's the first, glorious season all in one place.

The Notorious Bettie Page
We were all sad to learn of the passing of Bettie Page. This homage, directed by Mary Harron and starring Gretchen Mol, is a moving and tender portrait of the infamous pin-up star and the people who both created and consumed the imagery for which she's known best. (Winner, CineKink Tribute, CineKink '06)

Film Festival Secrets: A Handbook for Independent Filmmakers
You wouldn't step into a dungeon without knowing how not to flog somebody in the kidneys--well, at least you shouldn't. Similarly, don't set forth on the path of the film festival circuit without having some clue of what you're doing. Here's that and more, all jammed into one handy, travel-ready tome.

So, there's a good start! We're going to keep this brief since, well, we've still got some shopping of our own to do, but more rummaging can be found in our CineKink @ Amazon section--with past festival selections available here!

Don't mind the mess--we're still moving things around. And get shopping!

Filth and wisdom?

Just as with dating, it might be too much to expect both qualities in one package. And the not-so-mixed reviews don't exactly make a compelling argument for a dash to the cineplex. (Though largely affectionate--"I sort of liked it"--critic Andrew O'Hehir's review also includes the observation that it "...seems like a movie Jim Jarmusch might have started in 1991 and then abandoned because it wasn't going anywhere." Yikes! That's the very fear that has kept us unproductively lodged in our creativity burrow all these many decades.)

But Madonna's directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, would seem to have enough CineKink-relevant themes to warrant at least a quick go-over--and, who knows, quite possibly a Tribute? We're ever-eager to be happily surprised.

Poodle!

We're a little dubious about how affirmative a depiction one might expect in Choke, the adaptation of the Chuck Pulahniuk novel of the same name, but we have been amused at the trailer's bits of a forced entry roleplay scenario unfolding in the midst of cable news coverage of our nation's pending financial "bail-out."

Here, in a clip from the movie, our haplass, sex-addicted protagonist negotiates the terms of said scenario:

The movie opens tonight, but in the meantime, distributor Fox Searchlight is interested in hearing about your favorite types of roleplay. If you'd like to weigh in--or check in on some of the creative (or not) suggestions thus far--your chance is right here.

Stroke me, stroke me

In addition to a screening of Zack and Miri Make a Porno, opening night revelry for this year's Fantastic Fest included the first annual Air Sex World Championship. Kinda like air guitar, but pretty much not, as seen in this video via Spout, the competition featured live performers simulating sex, vying for the prize of a trip to Nevada and a gift certificate for some type of bunny ranch or another.

While air sex has been a regular installation at the festival's hosting venue in Austin, the activity can be traced back to Japan, the home of blurred depictions of pubic hair and other perversities. There, as seen in this clip from the television series Japanorama, the original version sports one critical distinction from its American imitators-- performers seemingly devoid of any actual sexual experience whatsoever:

The smart choice for your future?

Last night as we settled in to watch the Republic National Convention--nothing wrong with a little bi-partisan masochism!--we thought back to a favorite, short video that was once making the rounds.

For a presidential ticket dedicated to rolling back Roe v. Wade and a party that's built abstinence-only education into its national platform, we can think of no better tribute than this semi-vintage gem, Future:

From the folks at the now-defunt TechnicalVirgin.com, who also brought us the similarly-themed Boys Can Wait, the video had a recent round of notoriety when the the actress was sacked from her hosting gig on a PBS children's show because of her involvement in it.

Family values all around!

So gay!

Or, to be more politic, so same-sex!

We're slightly chagrined to admit, but our first thought upon learning that the California State Supreme Court had struck down laws limiting same-sex marriage was of the wedding invitations that would soon be winging their way to our mailbox. We do love a good party!

And ever since we endured the sweet tortures of planning our own wedding a few years back, one of our secret indulgences continues to be wedding porn, with a sordid, lingering taste for the occasional Whose Wedding is it Anyway? marathon.

So, while we're of course enraptured by the right-minded arguments of equality and fairness that surrounds this crucial advance, and there are many videos that might bring us to the edge of sincere choked-upped-ness, given that afterall, this is all really about the basic and simple ability to be publicly and legally joined with the a person you love, we'd also like to say, with this clip from the gay wedding episode of Party, Party - welcome to the freak show!

Holy seemingly gratuitous YouTube post, Batman!

We're still feeling a little jet-laggy and discombulated from our trip west and subsequent weather flip-flops. But our recent time back at home sorting through the family archives (aka clutter in the basement) triggered the recollection that one of our very first television idols was Batman. And for a time, we even had his picture tacked to the wall above our bed.

What this might mean in terms of early fetish imprints, we can only begin to speculate - see also The Sound of Music - but the thought did provide impetus to spend a good chunk of a rainy Monday morning procrastinating amongst the nostalgic offerings on YouTube.

Herewith, our early girl-crush, Batgirl, in her introduction to the series - along with the bemused wondering why our childhood Halloween rendition of her didn't somehow incorporate purple latex.

That, in itself, might explain a few things!

Many congratulations to CineKink alum Audacia Ray, whose new sexuality blog, Naked City, debuted this week at The Village Voice. A fight to the finish

The fifteenth and final New York Underground Film Festival kicked off last night and continues through April 8th at Anthology Film Archives.

In a comprehensive profile on indieWire about the changing landscape of underground festivals in the US, organizers point to new distribution technologies that make many of the works they showcase more readily accessible - a consideration also looming for kinky film festivals, no doubt. But they also question the nebulous definition of the genre itself:

"What is 'underground' film anyway?" wondered Ed Halter, the former director of NYUFF and one of this year's special curators. "The term 'underground' is problematic because most people are under the misconception that 'underground, is synonymous with 'shock' cinema."

In the comments to the article, filmmaker Ralph Ackerman puts the query in to some historical perspective:

I started making experimental films in 1963 and at that time we called it underground cinema because if we showed our films in the public we were always arrested for being obscene etc... Things are so mild now. Kenneth Anger with his trangressive films faced the coops (sic) often."

With that, our best wishes to NYUFF organizers in their new venture, Migrating Forms - and just one of the NYUFF '08 trailers, a retro-flavored, hair-pulling rendition commissioned from Peggy Ahwesh.

Unfortunately, due to technical circumstances that might have actually been within our control were we not also in the midst of yet another Mercury in retrograde, we were unable to do so.

So, as promised to those very intrepid souls who braved a blustery mix of rain and snow to pack the Pioneer Theater - and for the rest of you pussies who stayed home, all cozy and warm - here it is!

Kirby is, of course, a two-time CineKink alum, whose previous offerings with us include last festival's award-winning Do You Take It...? and the very popular Polly Wally in 2005.

WGA three-way!!

Trolling around YouTube on strictly CineKink-programming-related business, we once again found ourselves distracted and set off our course, this time with the latest from our friends at the WGA.

Herewith, Episode #34 of Speechless Hollywood, this one featuring our long-time crush-object, Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary, CineKink Tribute/2003), cooling her heels with a couple of other young lovelies, presented solely in the interest of worker solidarity:

Who knew it would end like that?!

And while we're at it...

As long as we're so busy avoiding resolutions, here's still another, an old favorite. And our best wishes for a splendid 2008, one full of happy surprises!

Unresolved...

If we actually believed in making resolutions, we'd likely resolve to make more posts that didn't involve just snagging a video from somebody else's blog, which seems to be our definite MO of late.

But there's plenty of time to be substantive in 2008. Meantime, a little New Year's hair of the dog and still another scantily clad woman - albeit this time cross-dressingly and somewhat gender-bendingly - presented in the interest of selling us something.

Ready for that twelfth day present yet?

Same as with the vanilla version, The Twelve Poly Days of Christmas goes on a wee bit too long, but all in good fun.

If you'd like to cut to the chase, Viviane's got the lyrics.

Shop! Buy! Consume!

Or just look at semi-clad women gyrate and tie one another up, in this launch of a new Agent Provocateur line of shoes.

If it's Monday, this must be Vegas...

Absolutely work-safe and not at all CineKinky, we're just happy to have made it out of the snow and away from O'Hare airport, all settled in to a king-sized bed for the International Film Festival Summit.

Just remember - what happens in Henderson, stays in Henderson.

Damn, did we sleep through Halloween again?

Ah, well. Werewolves on Wheels is always timely. Being the "most eerie, most chilling... motorcycle horror movie" ever made and all that, you know.

Now, that's what we call a friend

We're only into day #2 of the New York Leather Weekend + NYC Poly Pride mash-up - with a near week of events to go - and we're starting to get that tickling in the throat kind of thing that typically coincides with a change in the seasons.

Maybe in addition to our customary vitamin C + echinacea preventative mash-up, we'll power up with a bit of this?

Showbears!

In this latest from CineKink alum, David Quantic, follow the cut-throat auditions for Showbears, just one of several fantastical cinema-to-Broadway offerings in the works:

Once you're there, rummage around David's YouTube for the rest in his series of trailers for the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival - and then be sure to set your sights on the wonders of his Eargasm (CineKink/2005).

Talk dirty to me.

Oddly enough, we've forgotten all about tawdry, anonymous sex in a men's room stall, but can't stop thinking about Mr. Clinton. Just how nasty do you mean?!?
