Call for Entries - CineKink NYC/2009
CineKink NYC - "the really alternative film festival" - is seeking films and videos, of any length and genre, that explore and celebrate the wide diversity of sexuality. Dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television, we're looking to blur some boundaries and will be considering offerings drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, with works ranging from documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot porn, mildly spicy to quite explicit - and everything in between.
Cutting across orientations, topics covered at CineKink have included - but are by no means limited to - BDSM, leather and fetish, swinging, non-monogamy and polyamory, roleplay and gender bending. Or, frankly, given the current moral climate, as long as it involves consenting adults, just about anything celebrating sex as a right of self expression is fair game. (Far be it from us to define "kink" - if you think your work might make sense in this context, please send it along!)
Scheduled for its sixth annual appearance February 24-March 1, 2009, the specially-curated CineKink NYC will also feature a short film competition, audience choice awards, presentations, parties and a gala kick-off, with a national screening tour to follow.
The postmarked deadline for entries is November 15th.
CineKink to Take Part in Interactive/Film Panel at SXSW
Austin, TX; March 7, 2008 – As part of the SXSW Film & Interactive Festival, CineKink’s co-founder and director, Lisa Vandever, will moderate a panel on various regulations on sexual explicit content and how they may apply to various media producers.
THE PORN POLICE: KNOW THE RULES
Saturday, March 8 - 5-6 pm
It may seem like sex is everywhere in film, television and online, but sexual portrayals are surprisingly restricted - and getting more so everyday. Already draconian federal regulations on the depiction of sexually explicit conduct were recently expanded and signed into law by President Bush, and now apply to an even wider class of media makers. Not just pornographers, but anyone creating and working with explicit imagery of even simulated sexual conduct - bloggers, webmasters, narrative filmmakers, documentarians - needs to know the rules and the risks.
This session will touch upon:
Overview of 18 U.S.C. 2257 & 2257A record-keeping requirements for actual and simulated sexually explicit material
New wrinkles introduced by online access/distribution of materials
* Resources for additional information and advocacy support
Moderator - Lisa Vandever / CineKink
Panelists:
Violet Blue / tinynibbles.com
Tony Comstock / Comstock Films
Alan Levy / Attorney, Sedgwick Detert Moran & Arnold LLP
Joe Swanberg / Director of “Nights and Weekends”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CineKink Announces Kinky Line-Up for Fifth Annual Festival
February 26-March 2, 2008
NEW YORK, NY; February 7, 2008 - CineKink NYC returns for its fifth annual appearance on Tuesday, February 26th, bringing with it a specially-curated program of films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. In addition to screenings, plans for the festival also include a short film competition, presentations, audience choice awards, a fund-raising gala kick-off and a concluding afterglow party.
Billing itself as "the really alternative film festival," the event will run February 26-March 2, 2008. Presented by CineKink, an organization dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television, works presented at CineKink NYC will range from documentary to drama, mildly spicy to quite explicit - and everything in between.
"It seems our programming theme for this year was 'No mercy!'" says Lisa Vandever, CineKink's co-founder and director. "It's exciting to see sex-positive filmmaking really starting to come into its own. But it's going to be a true festival marathon. Even expanding our screenings into an additional day, we had so many fantastic works entered into the festival for 2008, we've really had to pack them into every possibly available moment."
The kink-filled festivities begin Tuesday, February 26th, at 8 PM, with a fundraising kick-off gala and opening night screening to be held at Taj Lounge (48 W. 21st Street, NYC), a pansexual celebration that, in addition to music, performances and a silent auction, features a trio of works by New York-based directors - SCHWARZWALD, TEAM QUEEN and A DOG'S TALE.
The festival then moves to Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue, NYC), Wednesday, February 27 through Saturday, March 1, with several different film and video programs scheduled for each day. Regular screenings conclude on Sunday, March 2, with the addition of a jump to Pioneer Theater (155 E. Third Street, NYC) for a final round of CineKink NYC matinees.
Among the headliners, first up, on Wednesday, February 27 at 7 PM, is the festival's CineKink Tribute screening of SHORTBUS, honoring the ground-breaking film for its "extraordinary depiction of kink in mainstream film and television." Then, at 9:30 PM, a program titled "New York Stories," surveys adult entertainment offerings from New York-based directors Tony DiMarco, Venus Hottentot, Michael Lucas, Radley Metzger, Porno Jim, Audacia Ray and Candida Royalle.
On Thursday, February 28 at 7 PM is TRIPLE X SELECTS: THE BEST OF LEZSPLOITATION, an international feast of lesbian-exploitation highlights from the 1960s and '70s, presented in all of their notoriously twisted glory, followed at 9 PM by VIVA, the sordid tale of a bored housewife who gets swept up in the sexual revolution, a highly stylized film that draws on classic exploitation cinema for its look, characters and story-line.
On Friday, February 29 at 7 PM, it's CALL ME TROY, an inspirational and moving tribute to gay activist and spiritual leader, Reverend Troy Perry. At 9 PM, SUSAN FOR NOW is a first-person account of a woman reclaiming her sexual freedom after a ten-year period of self-imposed celibacy. And at 11 PM, it's SEX MANNEQUIN and SUPERFREAK, a shape-shifting, body-swapping double-header of girl-girl adventures.
Kicking off Saturday, March 1 at 1 PM, "Lust, Animation!" is a colorful collection of naughty bits - some animated, all with lust burning hot in their hearts. At 3 PM, "Chick Flicks" presents works by women directors that incorporate explicit sex into their stories of hook-ups and romance. At 5 PM, during "Women Behind the Lens," a panel of female directors will discuss their roles within the adult entertainment industry and the individual approach each takes in depicting sexuality on screen. At 7 PM, it's "Mix, Match & Mingle," a round-up of shorts that look at the delights - and some dilemmas - of moving beyond monogamy, followed by "Give & Take" at 9 PM, a kinky collection of works that probe, prod and play with the dynamics of sexual power and release, control and submission. And, rounding out the day's screening schedule at 11 PM, THE THREE TRIALS is a dark, fairy-tale fantasy set against a backdrop of sexual fetishes.
Festival screenings move to Pioneer Theater on Sunday, March 2 at 1 PM with the New York premiere of ANNIE SPRINKLE'S HERSTORY OF PORN, featuring the best (and worst) clips from dozens of the 150+ films that Annie Sprinkle made from 1973 onwards. At 3 PM, "Sunday How-To Sex-O-Rama" is a selection of excerpts taken from top-notch educational and how-to offerings. Concluding the festival's regular screenings at 5 PM, the US premiere of SILKEN SLEEVES sensuously presents four seasons of domination and submission as rendered by bondage expert and artisan, Midori.
CineKink NYC concludes the evening of Sunday, March 2, at 7 PM with an Awards Celebration, including encore screenings of jury-selected best shorts from the week and presentation of the annual festival awards, to be followed at 8:3O PM by an Afterglow Party, one last chance to mingle with like-minded festival-goers and enjoy a few additional screenings, this time in a relaxed party setting. The locations for both events will be announced at a later date.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CineKink Announces Opening Night Selections for Fifth Annual Kinky Film Fest
NEW YORK, NY; January 31, 2008 - CineKink has announced the opening night selections for its fifth annual film festival, CineKink NYC, which is scheduled to unwind February 26-March 2, 2008. A trio of works by New York-based directors will be the centerpiece of the event's Kick-Off Gala and Opening Night Screening taking place on Tuesday, February 26th, a pansexual celebration that will also feature music, live performances and a fundraising silent auction.
The key offering for the evening, Richard Kimmel's SCHWARZWALD, is a rich, modern tapestry that combines elements of Druidic ritual with the passionate, leather-clad goings-on of NYC's annual Black Party. Following the travails of the Black Prince as he is pursued through the forest and kidnapped by underlings of the conniving Black Queen, the film stars Buck Angel, the world famous female-to-male transsexual porn star, along with a cast of literal thousands, and a continuous mix of music that culminates in what its creators are touting as "the movie you can dance to!"
"After introducing Buck Angel to New York audiences with our 2004 festival, we're delighted he'll be back on screen to open up this year's proceedings," said Lisa Vandever, Co-Founder and Director of CineKink. "And we're especially thrilled that he'll be wearing a spectacular blue frock through part of it - and cavorting in the woods with half-naked men through much of the rest. It's a truly gorgeous piece of filmmaking."
Also featured in the CineKink NYC opening night line-up is Leah Mayerhoff's TEAM QUEEN, a colorful music video for the group Triple Creme that features some of the best in New York burlesque in a gender-bending, fire-breathing, tassel-twirling, post-punk rock 'n roll extravaganza.
And rounding out the selections, A DOG'S TALE, a first-time directorial offering from photographer Steven Speliotis, is a sensuous and layered reverie on control and submission, longing and desire.
"We didn't set out to highlight New York directors necessarily, that was just a happy accident," continued Vandever. "We knew we wanted to do something splashy for our fifth annual kick off and we were looking for works that would hold up to presentation in a party environment."
SCHWARZWALD's Richard Kimmel is a theater director, writer and producer, with experience in creating, in addition to the live version of SCHWARZWALD, such performance events as "Pandora" and Jennifer Hudson's New York concert debut "One Night Only." He is also Executive Director of The Box, a venue on the city's Lower East Side, and Artistic Director of Cannon Company, a performance ensemble.
TEAM QUEEN's Leah Meyerhoff is currently pursuing a Master's in Film at New York University. A Student Academy Awards finalist, Leah's previous works have been a hit on the international film festival circuit and she is working on her first feature film.
The first-time director of A DOG'S TALE, Steven Speliotis, is an art and portrait photographer whose work has been exhibited in solo shows in New York and abroad, and is highlighted in the book "Asian Bondage."
With over 70 selections set to screen over the course of the event, CineKink NYC will feature a specially-curated program of films and videos that cuts across orientations to celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. In addition to screenings, the event will also feature a short film competition, audience choice awards, presentations, parties and a closing afterglow celebration.
The full program line-up for CineKink NYC, as well as additional details on the kick-off gala and advance tickets for the festival, will be available online beginning Monday, February 4th.
Among the CineKink: Chicago headliners, first up, on Thursday, November 29 at 7 PM, is "Vice and Consent," a documentary visit with such prominent, long-standing members of the BDSM community as Midori, Jay Wiseman and Cleo Dubois, along with "The Line Between," from Chicago filmmaker, Jonathan Marten. Then, at 9 PM, the drama "Going Under" traces the relationship of a married psychotherapist and a professional dominatrix he's been frequenting.
On Friday, November 30 at 7:00 PM, it's "Power Plays," short works that probe, prod and play with the dynamics of sexual power and fantasy, including work by local artist Usama Alshaibi, followed at 9:00 PM by "Passion Plays," a collection of erotic, sometimes explicit pieces that dance along the supposed boundary of art and pornography, including the banned-in-Australia documentary, "Damon and Hunter."
On Saturday, November 3, at 6:00 PM, "Liberty in Restraint" follows photographer Noel Graydon on a provocative journey into the world of fetish and S/M. And the festival wraps everything up at a 8:00 PM with a screening of the "Best of CineKink," a program of award-winning shorts deemed the best of the festival's most recent NYC appearance.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Early Deadline Approaches – 10/15
(New York, NY; October 10, 2007) Presented by CineKink, an organization dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of kink-positive depictions in film and television, CineKink NYC is seeking films and videos, of any length and genre, that explore and celebrate the wide diversity of sexuality. We're looking to blur some boundaries and will be considering offerings drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, explicit or not, with works ranging from documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot porn - and everything in between.
Cutting across orientations, topics covered at CineKink have included - but are by no means limited to - BDSM, leather and fetish, swinging, non-monogamy and polyamory, roleplay and gender bending. Or, frankly, given the current moralistic climate, as long as it involves consenting adults, just about anything celebrating sex as a right of self expression. (Far be it from us to define "kink" - if you think your work might make sense in this context, please send it along!)
Scheduled for its fifth annual appearance February 26-March 2, 2008, the specially curated CineKink NYC will also feature a short film competition, audience choice awards, presentations, parties and a gala kick-off, with a national screening tour to follow.
Film and video submissions have an early, discounted deadline of October 15, 2007 and a final deadline of November 15, 2007.
