Hi all –
Hope it’s been a lovely couple of weeks since CineKink NYC! Had planned to follow up on a couple of things long before now, but am actually home visiting family and helping out during my mom’s pending hip surgery; never seem to get quite as much accomplished as I think I will hunkered away in my childhood bedroom.
But a couple of things for/from you as we wrap up the NYC portion of CineKink 2009…
****
1) B-SIDE RATINGS AND REVIEWS
Be sure to encourage your friends, family and fans to sign up with B-Side and leave a review for your film – or if they’re lazy, just drop in and at least give it a rating. And don’t be shy about signing up yourself and doing the same for your fellow filmmakers (or yourself, if you’re really brazen!)
Here’s the blurb we used in our last update, feel free to adapt and use as you wish:
“You put all that time in the seats, be sure to let us know what you think!
Our CineKink NYC community on B-Side gives you the ability to rate your favorites (and, though hard to fathom, not-so-favorites) and leave reviews on the films you saw throughout the festival.
These reviews are keenly anticipated by our filmmakers, fellow audience members, other festival programmers and all of us at CineKink, as we use them to help determine and promote bookings for our upcoming tour appearances.
All you need is an email address, register here to be a part of it - and pass along your thoughts:
http://cinekink.bside.com/2009/”
2) PICTURES!
Are finally mostly up on Flickr – and will soon also appear on Facebook.
For your perusal, use and enjoyment:
CineKink Kick-Off Gala
NOTE: please credit any use “photo by Stacie Joy” and mention CineKink if you can.
3) TOUR
We’re just starting to piece together dates for the CineKink tour and will clue you in once there’s a bit of a schedule. Typically, the “Best of CineKink” shorts program gets the most (literal!) mileage, but in some cities/venues we’re able to expand into 1-3 nights and love to include as much programming as we can. I’m always on the look-out for kink-(not-un)friendly theaters/venues; let me know if you’re aware of one!
4) SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION
Please don’t be shy about sending me any news about you and/or your film(s). We like to include alumni news as part of our updates – be that a new film, an award or an upcoming dvd release. Sometime we can’t work it into an immediate update because of space, but will at least get something up on the CineKink blog.
Definitely send me any info about where people can purchase/download your work if available – be that Amazon, your own site, etc. I’ll be compiling a section to include all of that and would love to have as much as that to start as possible.
Also, feel free to utilize any of the CineKink communities we’ve created, jump in and promote yourself within them:

Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/pages/CineKink/43031490693
(if you’ve got a fan-page for your film, let me know and we’ll add it to the favorites)
MySpace - http://www.myspace.com/cinekink
LiveJournal - http://community.livejournal.com/cinekink/
Twitter - http://twitter.com/cinekink
(I’m still adjusting to this, but would be happy to retweet any news you’ve got out there)
That’s it for now. Thanks again for a wonderful festival – looking forward to a great season ahead!
Best,
Lisa
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CineKink Announces Festival Awards, Gives Tribute to "Swingtown" and "CSI"
NEW YORK, NY; March 3, 2009 - Rounding out multiple days of screenings and parties in its sixth annual appearance, organizers for CineKink NYC/2009 announced the recipients of awards in a range of categories during the film festival's closing celebrations held on Sunday, March 1, 2009.
"We had an unusual number of ties this year," noted Lisa Vandever, CineKink co-founder and director, as she presented the awards. "The quality of the selections in the festival was so consistently high this season, we created a lot of difficult choices for both jurors and audiences in determining the awards. My thanks to all of the filmmakers for allowing us to share their amazing works."
Audience Choice Awards were given to "The Auteur" (James Westby) for Best Narrative Feature and to "Graphic Sexual Horror" (Barbara Bell & Anna Lorentzon) and "Kinky" (A. Benjamin), tied for Best Documentary Feature. Honorable Mentions went to the documentaries "Happy Endings?" (Tara Hurley) and "Sex Positive" (Daryl Wein). The choice awards were determined by audience ballot just following each eligible film's screening during the festival.
In the shorts competition, juried festival awards went to "Kink, Inc." (Casey Clark) and to "Matinee" (Jennifer Lyon Bell), tied for Best Narrative Short, "Serving Madame Gina" (Gabriele Hoff) for Best Documentary Short, "Teat Beat of Sex: 8-11" (Signe Baumane) for Best Animated Short, "At the Porno Shop" (Michael Rehfield) for Best Musical Short and, tied for the Best Experimental Short award, "Erotic Moments" (Eva Midgley) and "Un Piede di Roman Polanski" (Lauren Wissot and Roxanne Kapitsa). Honorable Best Mention awards went to "Belle de Nature" (Maria Beatty), "BDSM: It's Not What You Think" (Erin Palmquist) and "Rubberheart" (Brian Crano).
Determining the shorts awards, CineKink jurors this year included Steven Speliotis, an alumni CineKink filmmaker, along with returning jurors Viviane, ring-leader of the sex blog "Viviane's Sex Carnival," and Bill Woods, a film festival programmer and curator of the New Filmmakers series at Anthology Film Archives.
The CineKink Tribute, recognizing extraordinary depictions of kink and sex-positivity in mainstream film and television, was presented to two works this year. The first was given to the short-lived television series "Swingtown" (CBS) for its "refreshingly upbeat presentation of non-monogamy and the swinging lifestyle as simply another type of relationship choice among many possibilities," while the second went to "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (CBS) for its "respectful and non-sensationalistic depiction of professional domination in the guise of lead character Grissom's long-time love-interest, Lady Heather."
Honorable mentions for the CineKink Tribute went to the movie "Burn After Reading" (Focus Features) and to the television series "How I Met Your Mother" (CBS). Works eligible for consideration this year were those released or aired in the United States from January 1, 2008 until December 31, 2008.
Making its sixth annual run February 24-March 1, 2009, CineKink NYC featured a specially selected program of films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. Billing itself as "the really alternative film festival," the event is dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television. With offerings drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, works presented at CineKink NYC ranged from documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot pornography, mildly spicy to quite explicit - and everything in between.
Selections from CineKink NYC will be featured in a traveling version of the festival, slated to appear in various cities throughout the coming year.
Hi again –
I’ll have a more formal release to go out tomorrow, but meantime wanted to pass along the information on awards presented for CineKink NYC/2009.
As I noted during last night’s ceremony, we had an unusual number of ties this year—and overall, the quality was so high for this festival, we had lots of difficult choices for jurors and audience alike.
Again, my thanks for the amazing collection of works we were able to share with our CineKink crowds this festival - with anticipation for a great tour ahead.
And congratulations to you all!
Best,
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25 ******************
Wednesday, February 25 - 6:45 PM
CineKink Season Opener!
SEX POSITIVE
(Daryl Wein, 2008, USA, 78 minutes)
When Richard Berkowitz arrived in New York City in the late 1970s, the sexual revolution was at its peak and, in a time when gay men lived and loved with wild abandon, he enjoyed lucrative work as an S/M top. And then he developed AIDS. Transforming himself from sex worker to ground-breaking AIDS activist, Berkowitz collaborated with performer Michael Callen and virologist Dr. Joseph Sonnabend to investigate and bring attention to the illness, and he helped author the first safe-sex manual. But instead of being lauded for such efforts, the assertion that a hedonistic lifestyle was contributing to the transmission of AIDS was denounced as self-hating and sex-negative, as few people--just as they were enjoying new freedoms--were ready to accept that they might be endangering their health with their choices.
With safer-sex practices a matter-of-fact occurrence for so many today, it's hard to remember that they weren't always in existence and Berkowitz's influence on our early awareness has been all but forgotten. In the face of this, SEX POSITIVE weaves an absorbing story of an activist hero-and places something we now take for granted into a compelling historical context.
1) FILMMAKERS ATTENDING CINEKINK NYC
We're getting down to the wire and wanted to check in again on filmmaker plans to attend CineKink NYC. One of my favorite things about CineKink is bringing together such a great community of like-minded filmmakers and hope you'll be part of it! We make a comp festival pass available so you're able to attend everything, screenings and parties inclusive, we just need to know you'll be here.
For those of you joining us, if I haven't heard from you already, it would also be great to know what day you'll be arriving/departing, your cell phone # and which events - other than your own screening, of course - you'd definitely like to attend. (You're welcome to any of it - and if you're not sure yet, that's fine - this just helps with our planning.)
Filmmaker attendance at the kick-off gala/fundraiser on 2/24 will be by guest list at the door (8 pm, Kush Lounge, 191 Chrystie Street), PLEASE indicate if you will be attending.

We will also need a separate RSVP if you plan to attend the Afterglow party on 3/1.
Otherwise, your filmmaker badge will be available for pick-up starting at the first screening, 2/25, at Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue @ 2nd Street, New York, NY 10003).

2) CINEKINK ON B-SIDE
There's still time to add photos and trailers to your listing on B-Side if you haven’t been able to do so already. Here, again, are their instructions:
"In our experience, a filmmaker can dramatically increase audience awareness of his/her film by filling the film details page with compelling information. You can track exactly how well your film is doing by checking the number of page views, calendar adds, and (once the film has screened) ratings and reviews -- all of which is displayed on the film page. You can even check the 'festival buzz' statistics to see how your film stacks up.
You can see the beginnings of the CineKink NYC community here:
http://cinekink.bside.com/2009
Just search for your film with the search box or click the "films" tab to see an alphabetical listing.
You may contribute still images, trailers, and a blog by following these instructions:
http://www.bside.com/about/festivals/filmmaker_instructions/
In these instructions, you will see references to uploading your files to a directory. The directory for CineKink NYC is 'cinekink2009.'
For additional help uploading images and trailers, please watch this tutorial video: http://tinyurl.com/6y8su3
If your film has screened previously at a B-Side Partner Festival, please let me know immediately with your film's title and the name of the festival and we will import images and collateral directly from that festival page.
Please e-mail filmmaker-support@bside.com directly with any questions or comments about the CineKink NYC community. Thank you!"

3) SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION
If you want to drive audience to your film, be sure you use the link connected to your film's page on B-Side. You can find this by opening either schedule or list view, then clicking on your film's title - then copy the URL that's showing in your web browser.
http://cinekink.bside.com/2009/schedule
http://cinekink.bside.com/2009/films
CineKink has several areas where we we'll be promoting the overall fest, feel free to track us down and piggy-back wherever you can.
Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/pages/CineKink/43031490693
Twitter - http://twitter.com/cinekink
We'll also be posting info on some key event websites, but do jump in with your own promotions as well - particularly if you have an in with a niche audience and/or are a regular participant in an online community.
More generic places you might check out are:
http://upcoming.yahoo.com
http://www.craigslist.com
I’ll be sending out a separate email to follow this, containing the program description text which was sent previously, but with address, ticket and linking info embedded. So you just need cut and paste!

4) FILM FESTIVAL SECRETS
While I'm thinking of it, wanted to put in a plug for Christopher Holland's book, "Film Festival Secrets," which is packed with practical and useful tidbits for promoting your film/screening during a festival.
It's available for immediate, free download here: http://filmfestivalsecrets.com/

5) PROGRAM PURCHASE LINKS
In addition to linking to your specific film and/or the link to the CineKink NYC website (http://www.cinekink.com), you may also want to be directing folks to the page on B-side for your particular program, which contains additional information and a link to purchase tickets.
For features, this will be a little more self-evident, but for shorts/excerpts, look for either the shorts program that includes you or the feature that you'll be preceding.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CineKink Announces Kinky Line-Up for Sixth Annual Festival
February 24-March 1, 2009
NEW YORK, NY; February 11, 2009 - CineKink NYC returns for its sixth annual appearance on Tuesday, February 24th, bringing with it a specially-curated program of films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. In addition to screenings, plans for the festival also include a short film competition, presentations, audience choice awards, a fund-raising gala kick-off and a concluding afterglow party.
Billing itself as "the really alternative film festival," the event will run February 24-March 1, 2009. Presented by CineKink, an organization dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television, works presented at CineKink NYC will range from documentary to drama, mildly spicy to quite explicit - and everything in between.
"With the amount of film and video we had under consideration jumping another fifty percent this year, it was a real challenge to cull everything down to fit the limited screening time we have available to us," said Lisa Vandever, Co-Founder and Director of CineKink. "Sex-positive filmmaking has really been coming into its own in the years we've been doing the festival and we're now reaping the benefit, with a stellar line-up of smart, sexy works to offer our audiences."
The kink-filled festivities begin Tuesday, February 24th, at 8 PM, with a fundraising kick-off gala and opening night screening to be held at Kush Lounge (191 Chrystie Street, NYC), a pansexual celebration that, in addition to music and performances, features a trio of cinematic works centered on fantasy and desire - ARTCORE, THE BLUE ROSE and EROTIC MOMENTS.
The festival then moves to Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue, NYC), Wednesday, February 25 through Saturday, February 28, with several different film and video programs scheduled for each day. An awards celebration and a party complete the festivities on Sunday, March 1.
Wednesday
Among the headliners, first up, on Wednesday, February 25 at 6:45 PM, is the festival's CineKink Season Opener screening of SEX POSITIVE, a compelling profile of Richard Berkowitz, a one-time S/M hustler turned AIDS activist, and his role in shaping our understanding of safe sex. Then, at 9:00 PM, in the psycho-sexual horror/thriller MINDFLESH, a London taxi driver must come to grips with increasingly realistic apparitions of a beautiful woman and intense fantasies that suddenly veer well beyond the realm of consent.
Thursday
On Thursday, February 26 at 6:45 PM, it's WHIPS & RESTRAINT, a kinky collection of shorts that dip into the toy-bag and play with the dynamics of sexual power and release, control and submission. Then, at 9 PM, the works in LIPSTICK & CRINOLINES make for a colorfully pansexual mash-up of gender frolics, blurred boundaries, several pairs of Lycra bicycle shorts--and some very high style!
Friday
On Friday, February 27 at 6:45 PM, THE WORKSHOP travels to a wooded glade near San Francisco, where a controversial 10-day seminar challenges the boundaries of normal convention and takes on societal constructs of sexuality and monogamy. At 9 PM the shorts program, WANTON FEMALE DESIRE, celebrates the pursuit of female pleasure and offers up some general guidance as to what it is that a woman might want. And at 11:10 PM, GRAPHIC SEXUAL HORROR takes a long peek behind the imposing facade of the notorious bondage website Insex.com, to explore the dark mind of its artistic creator and ask hard questions about personal responsibility and consent.
Saturday
Kicking off Saturday, February 28 at 12:30 PM, and playing with several other BDSM-related shorts, KINKY is a sexy, informative and humorous look at black sexuality, fetish and kink. At 2:30 PM, HAPPY ENDINGS? is an intriguing exploration of the Asian massage parlor industry in a city where a 25-year-old loophole has made the exchange of sex for money legal--as long as it happens indoors. At 4:30 PM, the comedic MARTA'S SEX TAPE, about a painter who decides to make "special films" to pay off a loan, plays with two other colorful shorts on some ins-and-outs of work in the adult sphere. At 6:45 PM it's TWISTED KNICKERS, a swirl of assorted kinky comedic bits, some of them funny "ha-ha," some of them just a little bit off-kilter. At 9 PM, THE AUTEUR, a mélange of romantic comedy and raunchy satire set in the world of adult film, tells the story of renowned porn director Arturo Domingo, the creative genius behind such classics as 'Five Easy Nieces' and 'Requiem for a Wet Dream.'
And, closing out the festival's regular screening schedule at 11:10 PM, a special event, BRING IT!, features a dazzling array of talent from today's adult cinema, each representing a wide range of genres and visual styles, all stepping up with a hot sampling of their recent creative endeavors.
CineKink NYC concludes the evening of Sunday, March 1 at 6 PM, with an Awards Celebration, including encore screenings of jury-selected best shorts from the week and presentation of the annual festival awards, to be followed at 8:3O PM by the CineKink Afterglow Party, one last chance to mingle with like-minded festival-goers and enjoy a few additional screenings, this time in a relaxed play party setting. The locations for both events will be announced at a later date.
Hi again -
Making some slow progress on this side, with a few delays in getting the website updated and our ticketing service up and running. Expect to have that completed later today and will send you another blast once it's done, though feel free to start notifying people about your screening times.
Meanwhile, below I'm passing along a note from B-Side Entertainment, who is again working with CineKink in creating a festival community around our activities. We're excited about this continuing partnership and I hope you'll enjoy being an interactive participant in the CineKink proceedings.
If you haven't yet forwarded your photos to us--or even if you just want to get a jump on things--please go and upload them directly to the B-Side page for your film. There's also the ability to add trailers to your page, if you've got them, and to link to your blog.
One thing to keep in mind is the caveat that the space isn't designated as "adult," so please be somewhat conservative in what you upload--my rule of thumb is I try to save the really lascivious stuff for the big screen!
All instructions below. More from me later...
Thanks!
Lisa
PS - if you note strange photos already loaded into your B-Side page, they were transferred over from a film in the B-Side system with a similar name and I've alerted them of the issue. They should be removed shortly.)
From B-Side...
This year CineKink NYC has partnered with B-Side Entertainment to create an interactive program guide and screening schedule where audience members can create customized calendars, rate and review the films they see, and learn more about movies they might want to see.
As a filmmaker, you have the opportunity to reach your audience directly by contributing information to your film page -- still images, trailers, additional cast and crew information, and even a filmmaker blog where you can add text entries to your film's page on the festival site. Rarely have filmmakers been given so much control over how their films are presented at a film festival.
For a good example of what can be accomplished on a B-Side film details page, check out this page for 'Bama Girl at the 2008 Atlanta Film Festival:
http://tinyurl.com/43f4fn
In our experience, a filmmaker can dramatically increase audience awareness of his/her film by filling the film details page with compelling information. You can track exactly how well your film is doing by checking the number of page views, calendar adds, and (once the film has screened) ratings and reviews -- all of which is displayed on the film page. You can even check the "festival buzz" statistics to see how your film stacks up.
The directory for CineKink NYC is "cinekink2009."
Thank you!

While we aren't able to cover travel expenses for the event, we do provide all filmmakers with a complimentary pass to the entirety of the festival, including all screenings and parties, and can pretty much guarantee you'll have a great time!
Let me know as soon as you're aware whether your schedule will permit you to attend and we'll be sure to set aside a festival badge for you.
We're also considering the possibility of adding some panels to Sunday afternoon (3/1), so it would be good to know who will be around and might be interested in participating. And we're looking to schedule a filmmaker gathering/reception for some point during the festivities, and would love to get a sense of who's around when, from both visiting and local filmmakers.
Hi all -
At long last, below is the list of which works screen when during CineKink NYC, February 24-March, 2009.
The full program announcement will be following in a day or two, but for now, at least you'll know when you're up in the schedule!
This information is still fairly fresh for us as well, so we're currently updating the website, getting ticket sales prepped and working with B-side on setting up the CineKink community there. We'll give you another shout once that's up and ready to link. Also look for an email to follow shortly with info on attending the festival and one for uploading your pictures/trailers to our website/community on B-Side.
Once you’ve had a chance to look this over, please reply to this email, confirming receipt and, if we will still need an exhibition print/tape for you, advise us of format. (Apologies if that info may be redundant to what you’ve already told us. Some data didn’t transfer over well from Withoutabox – and information often changes in any case.)
Alright, here we go…

PRINT/TAPE TRAFFIC
Interspersed in the program schedule are notations as to which format is preferred for a particular screening. If this is a problem for you, though, or you have any questions, just let me know.
Theater Screenings:
For those works screening at Anthology Film Archives we can screen in Beta SP or mini DV; also 35 or 16mm film. In a pinch, we can also screen off of DVD or vhs, but it is definitely not our preference.
For the shorts programs we’ll be preparing some compilation screening tapes, particularly for those works under ten minutes. In these cases we should be able to work from the dvd we have on hand. Any exceptions are noted.
Featured Works/Kick-Gala and AfterGlow Party:
As far as print/tape traffic goes, for those works screening at the Kick-Off Gala or at the AfterGlow Party, dvd playback is all we have available, so you don't need to provide anything new.
