Some sad news on the CineKink front. After several years battling Alzheimer’s, then a sudden stroke in February, my father quickly declined and passed away last month. Very glad, though, that I was home at the end, and able to spend some extra time with him, along with my mom and sister.

William Vandever

Bill Vandever, 1971

In addition to being, inarguably, the best dad ever, William Mathewson Vandever was also my favorite CineKink alumni filmmaker. (I know I’m not supposed to have favorites, but hey…) Emblematic of the wit and sly humor he brought to everything, his 1964 short film, Media Dreams, screened with us in 2006 and, featuring a sexy Barbie doll come to life, was likely an early influencer in my compulsion to create CineKink in the first place. (Making it a real family production, my mother was a body-double for some of the more risqué shots, and the two of us had cameos as roughly ourselves at the film’s end. Watching it now, how could I not have created CineKink?)

CineKink PDX: 2--6

CineKink PDX: 2006

Though it was expected, my dad’s passing was a difficult time. Even more heartbreaking, however, was the loss of his lifetime of memories, and watching as he lost his brilliant way with words and, increasingly, his ability to communicate with us.

If you’’d like to support an amazing organization, one which offered at least a small way to connect with him in the end, or if you have a loved one who’s struggling with dementia, please take a moment to check out Music & Memory.

And to learn more about the great work they do, here’s a trailer for the incredible documentary Alive Inside.

Thanks so very much for your good thoughts!

CineKink Film Festival To Open With ‘Inside Her Sex,’ Sets Focus on Women and Pleasure

CineKink has announced that the US premiere of Inside Her Sex will be the “Season Opener” selection for its twelfth annual film festival, CineKink NYC, running February 24-March 1, 2015.

Directed by Sheona McDonald, the documentary explores female sexuality, and its intersection with shame, through the eyes and experiences of three women – Candice, Elle and Samantha – each brave enough to chart her own course of sexual discovery. While the women have little in common, each have faced their sexual selves head on, choosing to step outside the bounds of what society has dictated and find their own way forward.

Inside Her Sex is a fascinating look at the many ways in which we’re told and taught to view ourselves sexually, and how we might move beyond that,” said Lisa Vandever, co-founder and director of CineKink. “It’s also a perfect film to launch this year’s festival, one in which female sexual expression, and female creativity, are especially prominent.”

Along with a short documentary, It’s My Birthday And I’ll Fly If I Want To, from director Morgana Muses, Inside Her Sex will screen on Wednesday, February 25, 7:00 PM at Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue, NYC), where the majority of CineKink NYC’s screenings are also unfolding.

Several other programs in the festival line-up will continue CineKink’s focus on female pleasure and self-expression:

  • Lust Stories is a collection of lust-filled, female-centric shorts from women directors (Friday, 2/27, 7:15 PM).
  • A Tribute to Club 90 brings together four denizens of NYC’s “Golden Era of Porn” – Veronica Hart, Candida Royalle, Annie Sprinkle and Veronica Vera – for a rare public appearance and some frank reminiscing (Friday, 2/27, 9:30 PM).
  • High Shine: 15 years of International Ms Bootblack pays tribute to the many woman-identified bootblacks of the leather community, and the traditions and practices that sustain them (Saturday, 2/28, 1:00 PM).
  • A feminist porn edition of Bring It!, CineKink’s annual porn showdown, features an array of talent from today’s adult cinema (Saturday, 2/28, 5:00 PM).
  • And award-winning filmmaker, Jennifer Lyon Bell, will present a workshop, From Fantasy To Film: Intro to Making Your Own Porn, for those inspired to create their own erotic cinema (Sunday, 3/1, 2:00 PM).

CineKink NYC returns for its twelfth annual appearance on Tuesday, February 24th, bringing with it a specially-curated program of films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. In addition to screenings, plans for the festival also include a short film competition, presentations, audience choice awards, a fund-raising kick-off gala and a concluding afterglow party.

Billing itself as “the kinky film festival,” the event will run February 24-March 1, 2015. Presented by CineKink, an organization dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television, works presented at CineKink NYC will range from documentary to drama, comedy to experimental, mildly spicy to quite explicit – and everything in between.

“With so much attention on kink in the mainstream, and the release of ‘Fifty Shades,’ it’s exciting to be back with such a rich and diverse festival line-up,” said Lisa Vandever, co-founder and director of CineKink. “We’ve been keeping it kinky for twelve years now, and we’ll have offerings that will appeal both to those who’ve been with us since the start, and to those who have just recently been inspired to explore.”

The CineKink NYC festivities begin Tuesday, February 24th, at 8 PM, with a fundraising kick-off extravaganza to be held at Taj (48 W. 21st Street, NYC), a pansexual celebration that, in addition to music and sexy performances, offers several cinematic gems up on the screen.

The festival then moves to Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue, NYC) from Wednesday, February 25 through Saturday, February 28, with several different film and video programs scheduled for each day.

A DIY filmmaking workshop, an awards celebration and an AfterGlow play party complete the festival’s run on Sunday, March 1.

    WEDNESDAY
Among the headliners, first up on Wednesday, February 25 at 7:00 PM, the festival’s CineKink Season Opener screening of INSIDE HER SEX, a thought-provoking, boundary-pushing film, explores female sexuality and shame through the eyes and experiences of three women. Then, at 9:00 PM, contestants pantomime sexual encounters with imaginary partners in a raucous documentary, AIR SEX: THE MOVIE, that follows The Air Sex championship tour around the country.

    THURSDAY
On Thursday, February 26 at 7:00 PM, BACK ISSUES: THE HUSTLER MAGAZINE STORY is a definitive look at the personalities that created what might be the most offensive magazine of all time. Then, at 9:00 PM, a double-feature, LOVE HARD and BODY OF GOD, celebrates the exploration of limits…be those of mind, body and/or soul.

    FRIDAY
On Friday, February 27 at 7:15 PM, LUST STORIES is a hot set of lust-filled, female-centric shorts. And at 9:30 PM, A TRIBUTE TO CLUB 90 brings together four denizens of NYC’s “Golden Era of Porn” – Veronica Hart, Candida Royalle, Annie Sprinkle and Veronica Vera – for a rare public reunion and frank reminiscing.

    SATURDAY
Kicking off Saturday, March 1 at 1:00 PM, HIGH SHINE: 15 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL MS BOOTBLACK pays tribute to the many woman-identified bootblacks of the leather community, and the traditions and practices that sustain them.

At 3:00 PM, in AGE OF CONSENT, the story of the Hoist, London’s first and only gay sex/fetish bar, coincides with the history of AIDS, gay gentrification and the ongoing struggle to decriminalize homosexual activity, including BDSM, in the United Kingdom.

At 5:00 PM, an annual porn showcase, BRING IT!, features a dazzling array of talent from today’s adult cinema, each representing a wide range of genres and visual styles, all stepping up with a hot sampling of their recent endeavors.

At 7:15 PM, a collection of kinky shorts, MORE THAN 50, moves beyond gradations of gray to celebrate a wide gamut of bondage, discipline, dominance, submission and sadomasochism.

And at 9:30 PM, the festival’s closing competition film, MARRIAGE 2.0, looks at the possibilities and pitfalls of an open relationship, following one couple on their search to balance personal freedom with emotional and sexual bliss.

    SUNDAY
For those who may have been inspired to take a go at creating their own erotic cinema, a workshop, FROM FANTASY TO FILM: INTRO TO MAKING YOUR OWN PORN, will take place from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.

CineKink NYC concludes the evening of Sunday, March 1 at 7:00 PM, with a CINEKINK AWARDS CELEBRATION, including presentation of the annual festival awards, to be followed at 9:00 PM by the CINEKINK AFTERGLOW party, one last chance to mingle with like-minded festival-goers and enjoy a few additional screenings, this time in a relaxed play party setting.

CineKink Reunites Golden Era Porn Legends For “A Tribute to Club 90”

A TRIBUTE TO CLUB 90 will be the centerpiece of our twelfth annual film festival, CineKink NYC, which runs February 24-March 1, 2015.

Bringing together four of the club’s founding members for a rare public reunion, the special event will take place Friday, February 27 at 9:30 PM, at Anthology Film Archives.

    Club 90

Five adult film stars from New York’s “Golden Age of Porn,” Veronica Hart, Gloria Leonard, Candida Royalle, Annie Sprinkle and Veronica Vera, came together in 1983 to create Club 90, the first-ever porn star support group. Named for the address of the living room where they regularly met, the group forged a bond that would continue for more than thirty years. Turning to one another as they began to navigate life after starring in blue movies, these dynamic women went on to pursue their own personal and creative goals, and in the process, blazed new trails in the fields of human sexuality, women’s empowerment, erotic expression, and free speech.

    – Veronica Hart, aka Jane Hamilton, has had a long career in adult and mainstream movies, still working on both sides of the camera. She also uses her expertise to educate women in the U.S. and China on issues of love, intimacy, aging and self-pleasure.

    – Gloria Leonard debated some of the toughest anti-porn activists and toured college campuses as a self-described “stand up constitutionalist,” enlightening students on the First Amendment. She was the first woman president of the Free Speech Coalition.

    – Candida Royalle created Femme Productions in 1984 and became known for “pioneering erotic cinema from a woman’s perspective,” encouraging other women to follow her lead.

    – Annie Sprinkle morphed into a performance artist and sexologist, sharing her experiences through her own unique brand of “Post Porn” films, books and articles, theater performances, and teaching.

    – Veronica Vera founded the world’s first cross-dressing academy, Miss Vera’s Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls, enriching the lives of trans people across the gender spectrum.

In 2002, Ms. Sprinkle earned her PhD from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco. Mses. Hart, Leonard, Royalle and Vera were each awarded the degree Doctor of Human Sexuality in 2014.

“The women of Club 90 have always been a huge source of inspiration for those of us in the sex-positive movement, particularly women,” said Lisa Vandever, CineKink co-founder and director. “With their unabashed stance that feminism and sexual self-expression can be one, and a body of work that spans an incredible range of creativity and activism, we’re honored to bring them together for this rare reunion.”

Featuring clips of the group’s favorite work from both sides of the camera, A TRIBUTE TO CLUB 90 will also include a special remembrance of Gloria Leonard, who passed away in 2014, along with frank and funny reminiscences of the days when NYC was America’s sex film capital, movies were shot on 35mm film, and Times Square was strictly x-rated.

Known as the “kinky film festival,” CineKink NYC runs February 24 through March 1, 2015, and will again feature films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. With offerings drawn from both the independent film world and the adult, works presented at the festival will range from documentary to drama, comedy to experimental, slightly spicy to quite explicit – and everything in between.

A TRIBUTE TO CLUB 90 will take place on Friday, February 27, 9:30 PM at Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue, NYC). Tickets are $20 and will be available for advance purchase; discounted festival passes are also available.

Call for Entries – CineKink 2015 / Twelfth Edition

CineKink –“the kinky film festival”–is seeking films and videos, of any length and genre, that explore and celebrate a wide diversity of sexuality. Dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television, we’re looking to blur some boundaries and will be considering offerings drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, with works ranging from documentary to drama, camp comedy to artsy experimental, mildly spicy to quite explicit–and everything in between.

Basically, as long as it involves consenting adults, just about anything celebrating sex as a right of self expression is fair game. (Far be it from us to define “kink” – if you think your work might make sense in this context, please send it along!)

Scheduled for its 12th annual appearance in February 2015, the specially-curated CineKink NYC will also feature a short film competition, audience choice awards, a special adult entertainment showcase/contest, a gala kick-off event and a sexy closing-night party. A national tour will follow, showcasing favorites from the NYC festival selections.

Discounted, early-bird entries have a post-marked deadline of October 17th, while the regular deadline is November 21st and the final deadline is December 5th.

THE SARNOS: A LIFE IN DIRTY MOVIES will be the “CineKink Season Opener” selection for the eleventh annual film festival, CineKink NYC, running February 25-March 2, 2014.

The documentary is a love story about legendary sexploitation director Joe Sarno, “the Ingmar Bergman of 42nd Street,” and his wife and collaborator Peggy. Following the couple for a year, as 88-year old Joe struggles to get a new project off the ground, the film’s intimate perspective reveals a filmmaker’s golden years and a quest for significance, while providing a look back at the evolution of softcore films into the hardcore porn that all but put the Sarnos out of business.

“I always knew that Joe and Peggy, and their relationship, would be a big part of the film,” said director Wiktor Ericsson, describing how he became involved with the project. “I fell in love with them before I knew anything about Joe’s filmmaking: ‘Imagine your favorite grandparents, only they make sex movies!'”

“I’ve been a long-time fan of Joe Sarno’s films, and the way they capture the abandon and hedonism of a particular time and place,” said Lisa Vandever, co-founder and director of CineKink. “What struck me here was the poignancy of a man looking back at his life, and working to revive what had once given him a sense of purpose and relevance.”

THE SARNOS: A LIFE IN DIRTY MOVIES will screen on Wednesday, February 26, 7:00 PM at Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue, NYC), where the majority of the festival’s screenings are also unfolding. Immediately following, at 9:00 PM, CineKink will present THE BED AND HOW TO MAKE IT, a black-and-white classic from Sarno’s early, New York-centered prime, which follows the sordid goings-on that transpire when a young woman goes to work as a chambermaid in her aunt’s motel.

CineKink NYC kicks off the previous evening, Tuesday, February 25, with a gala fundraising kick-off party at Taj Lounge (48 W. 21st St., NYC), and runs through Sunday, March 2, concluding with an awards ceremony and an AfterGlow closing party.

Known as the “kinky film festival,” CineKink NYC will again feature films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. With offerings drawn from both the independent cinema world and the adult, works presented at the festival will range from documentary to drama, comedy to experimental, slightly spicy to quite explicit – and everything in between.

The screening of THE SARNOS: A LIFE IN DIRTY MOVIES is made possible by Film Movement, which will be distributing the documentary sometime next summer. THE BED AND HOW TO MAKE IT is courtesy of DistribPix.

CineKink reminds adult industry filmmakers of the deadline for entries for its 2014 Bring It! adult cinema showcase, to be held in February during the annual “kinky film festival” in New York.

CineKink is seeking short films and videos for Bring It! that explore and celebrate a wide diversity of sexuality, with specific emphasis on and from the adult film industry. Submissions may also be excerpts from longer works. The offerings are intended to serve as a sampler of what styles of works are being created by current filmmakers in the adult industry. A winner will be selected from the Bring It! showcase, determined by audience vote of those present for the screening.

“Since modern-day porn wasn’t created with a theatrical audience in mind, we began excerpting adult works as a way to share those films with our audience in a way they would more easily–and comfortably– appreciate.” says Lisa Vandever, CineKink co-founder and director. “We’ve started to review some great submissions from the adult industry; we’d like to remind those who have yet to submit that the final deadline is Friday!”

In addition to the “Bring It!” screenings, CineKink’s “Pornapalooza” programming sidebar, traditionally scheduled during the Saturday afternoon of the festival, will also include works about porn and porn-making, as well as a panel discussion. Past panels have included topics such as “Feminist Porn,” a discussion on ethical porn-making, and “The State of Smut: NYC.”

Bring It! screenings, which became competitive in 2010, have featured works by such directors as multiple Bring It!-award-winning Tristan Taormino, as well as additional winners Petra Joy and Courtney Trouble, along with Buck Angel, Eli Cross, Dominick Ford, Ernest Greene, Nenna Joiner, Kimberly Kane, Eddie Powell, Candida Royalle, Madison Young, and more.

There is no restriction on production completion dates, as long as the work is completed at the time of submission. International submissions in most overseas formats are also accepted. The final postmark deadline for submissions is December 13th.

For more information and details on entry submissions, check out the CineKink call for entries or submit directly via Withoutabox.
